Vermont print

Vermont Life was a state-published magazine from 1946-2018, known for its traditional photographs of fall foliage, maple sugaring, skiing, dairy farming, and all things folksy. I grew up in Vermont, as did my mother and grandmother, and my love for the mountains and forests goes deep.

The images in my Vermont Life series present a counter to those published by the magazine. They’re not idealized. To make the work, I wander through my home state with a bag of paper cut-outs and my smartphone, photographing directly.

These prints come out of my sensibility as a sculptor. I started creating 3-dimensionally by seeing snowfall transform my world into soft shapes, and by feeling like I was IN a sculpture when skiing Mt. Mansfield. I got to know intimately the contours of Vermont landscapes in a similar manner -- by climbing its rocks and lying in its moss. That experience inspires this body of work.
